You scare me...

The Pequod's crew was obviously intimidated by the special whalers Ahab brought along for his voyage. Have you ever been intimidated by a more experienced or skilled individual?

I can't say that I've ever been truly intimidated by a more experienced or skilled individual. But I have felt extremely ashamed for not being as clever myself as I've seen others be within my vicinity, whether in competitions or what not. Wait, no. I've definitely felt intimidated at the chess board multiple times, against a person 500 points above me in rating.

I will agree with MobysEye in being intimidated by a superior opponent in chess; though for me this has only occurred once, when I was scheduled to play the first game of the GMC tournament against the crazy Indian girl from Sycamore who had brutally slaughtered me just a few days prior in our regular season match. Aside from that instance, I don't believe I have felt particularly intimidated by those more skilled than myself, although I have had plenty of opportunity to meet people who far surpass me in some respect or other, especially in my musical pursuits. I more often draw inspiration from people who are better than me at something and strive to reach (or surpass) their level. Whether I succeed in those attempts is another matter, but I would say it is certainly more positive to use more experienced individuals as a motivation to improve your own abilities rather than being terrified of them.

I tend to shy away from playing publically, especially competitions but last year I competed in a city-wide solo competition that rather scared me wit-less. Hearing everyone else warming up and thinking that I could never perform as well as them is not the best feeling in the world. Ultimately, though, I did my best which is all I could have hoped for. But it would have been nice to not shake so much while playing.

A couple of years back I was just starting out in a new sport that I had only been playing for a month. At the start of the season I played in my first tournament. I was extremely nervous throughout the entire tournament since I was playing against kids who had been playing the sport for years. Despite my shaking I was able to finish second in the tournament and I realized that its natural to be nervous and the key is to focus and put it out of your mind.

Although I have felt intimidated by people who are more skilled/experienced than I am, I wouldn't necessarily say that it is a bad thing. Contrarily, I find it to be refreshing. When I see someone succeeding in a sport/school subject/etc that I usually shine in, it humbles me. Someone who succeeds all the time might gain TOO much confidence and will be truely devastated when he/she finally meets someone more intelligent or skilled.

I've definitely felt intimidated by someone more skilled than me especially when it comes to public speaking. I hate it! However, I know it's a necessity in life and will be very crucial in college. I always find it hard to speak up even though I want to contribute to discussions just as much as the next person. It seems like my friends or others that I know don't have this problem at all or they hide it very well. I just need to chill and say what I'm thinking without being nervous all the time.

Ahab is definately driven by free will. Let's be completely serious, who's fate is determined by finding a whale? He has become completely obsessed with Moby that he is convinced it is his purpose in life to find him. It's kind of rediculous.

that last post was supposed to be in the other blog. oops.

Anyway, I usually don't get intimidated. However, when I went to my first college audition. I'm used to everyone telling me I'm the best, I know, silly. But, when I went to Belmont, I was surrounded by incredibly talented people that I didn't feel like I could measure up to and I knew I was about to be compared to all of these people. It was intimidating.

Evey day in English class a bully mistreats me. He takes my lunch money, and threatens to beat me up. I'm too scared to tell Mrs.Baird, but since this is anonymous I will. He is known as R Killa to most but you might know him as Russel Ault.
