It's a pleasure to be abused by you...

Stubb's dream seems to tell him that if Ahab kicks him, it's a noble man who does it, and he should feel honored to be kicked by such a man. It's similar to contestants lining up to be abused by Simon Cowell on American Idol--what he says, Paula Abdul would never get away with! Can you relate?

In my humble opinion, the noble man who kicks should not be revered any more than the ignoble one. One should only feel ashamed for being kicked if it were necessary, receiving the punishment with resignation.

Fye! Shame at a kick only delays the lesson. Do better so that you won't get kicked the next time. Shame itself should rather be manifested asself defense and the need to be better. If everyone is kicked by someone no shame should be felt, no kick should be passed on and everyone's shoulder blades should be rubbed.

I don't put up with people treating me badly no matter how powerful tey may think themselves to be. I know several people, though, that let everyone walk all over them. it is quite sad.

I agree with chanteuse. It would be like the nerds of the world feeling proud that, hey, they got shoved into the lockers today by the popular kids! And how was your day?
Really, abuse is abuse regardless of where it comes from. I think that the contradiction between Ishmael's ideals that everyone is equal and the idea that Ahab, as a noble man, is allowed to kick Stubb, is interesting though.

Well I feel like I can relate to this situation. It actually reminds me of my father. Sometimes I feel like he will nit-pick at everything that I do and he always finds something to yell about. However, I have a tremendous amount of respect for him because he is such a hard worker and he has been through so much in life. I know that he wants the best for me and he will do anything he can to help me succeed. So in a way, his temper and complaints is really his way of saying "I know you can do better and I'm going to push you because I want you to have the things I never got to have".

If you deserve the abuse then it shouldn't matter who doles it out, you should accept it and try to learn from it.

If I was to suffer abuse from an individual for my mishap, it would depend on who it was to determine my reaction. If it were Jim Tressel who punished me, I would accept it and learn from it but if any Michigan fan did it, then I would return the favor tenfold.

No. Getting kicked is getting kicked. Getting kicked results in desire for revenge. Hmm...perhaps Ahab shouldn't be the only one out for vengeance......
